Shoes on powerlines

Postby NoLibs138 » Tue Mar 27, 2012 8:37 pm

I've noticed a new collection of shoes on cambridge street. Is there anyway we can remove shoes from lines as part of the April neighborhood clean up? I contacted 311 and the city won't do anything about it and either will PECO. They are just an eye sore and I'm sure in some cases bring drugs into the area.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how do shoes on power lines bring drugs into the area?

Sometimes dealers will throw shoes over lines to signify drugs are sold in that area. I just know a new set of shoes went up on our powerlines a few weeks ago and I recently found an empty dime bag near our front door. Other times it may just be kids...either way it junks up the neighborhood.

I've seen shoes on power lines in the suburbs, the city and in rural areas since the 1960's, before crack.

Okay -- YES. We -- by which I mean the team of people led by you, NoLibs138 -- can certainly make that one of the projects of the April 14th cleanup day.

Northern Liberties' main cleanup effort that day is a neighborhood work day at Liberty Lands. We do these twice a year, but it's fun to have the rest of the city pitching in to clean up on the same day. Plus there's special trash pick up.

But the NLNA is also encouraging people to do block cleanup of their own blocks on that day as well. And President Matt Ruben is organizing a "bandit sign" removal effort to take down those crummy illegal advertising signs on the telephone poles. Seems to me as if his team -- who will have ladders -- and your team -- who will need ladders and someone with a clear sense of how you get those shoes down without electrocuting yourselves -- belong together.

So you especially need to contact the NLNA -- go to www.nlna.org, or e-mail Lara, the great goddess of Northern Liberties organization, at trash@nlna.org -- to plan your assault. Anyone else who wants to organize a block cleanup and get the special trash pickup ON THAT DAY (which is essential, or the wind will eliminate your work) should also contact the NLNA to get signed up. Tools like brooms, shovels, trash bags, and gloves will be available at the NLNA office for borrowing.

Oh. And I like the snopes article. I always thought it was a drug-dealer sign, too, although obviously not a good one, because there are way too many shoes around for them all to be drug corners.

Luckily this is not as big a problem here as it is in other parts of the city, but this is a great cleanup project idea...

And if I may piggyback on Janet's clean up comments I would like to suggest that you contact the Anti-Grafitti department to remove the grafitti as well. They should be in the area soon - I've contacted them about the stuff on 4th and Green. The on-line form is easy to fill out. Just go to the Phila. Government page for the link.

All the talk about it makes me wonder how many tosses it would take me to get a pair up there successfully... a lot of them are probably up there for similar reasons
