Attempted break-in on the 1000 block of N Leithgow

Postby NoLibsTownwatch » Tue Oct 23, 2012 9:19 pm

A Neighbor writes:

Today (10/23/12), there was an attempted break-in on the 1000 block of N Leithgow. Surveillance video has been turned over the the police. Shortly after 10am, the suspect walked down the street and tried to open each door.

When no doors opened, he went to the gate leading to a neighbor's backyard. He kicked in the gate, and then ran away. About five minutes later, he returned and slipped through the gate and behind the house. The neighbor was home and heard something in her backyard; she opened the door and confronted the intruder who was trying to steal a ladder. He dropped the ladder and ran. The police were called.

The suspect is described as an adult black male, approximately 6' tall wearing a dark camo jacket, dark pants, and carrying a dark backpack.

This is just a reminder to all of our neighbors to keep their doors locked and keep an eye out for strange activity.

Narcotics need to be completely decriminalized and free. Problem solved.

it's unfortunate she did not have a firearm

the only way to eliminate crime is to eliminate the criminals

Are you really suggesting that she should have killed the man? Really?

I am so tired of gun nuts.

Also, do NOT use lock boxes for any reason. these criminals know how to break and open them, which resulted in the burglary of my home on the 900 block of N 5th last week.

We also should start an initiative to have everyone in the whole neighborhood use an exterior front light that is always on.

I completely agree with this notion. Often deterring crime is as easy as having well lit streets. It minimizes the dark alleys for criminals to hide in. It's a simple, cheap and effective solution. How do you propose getting this initiative off the ground?

well, a few of the houses across from me are real dark out front, so I was thinking of dropping them a note. Not sure what incentive I can offer other though...

I also intend to install cameras that face in both directions.

Any idea where reasonably priced security cameras can be purchased or whether it's worth looking into bulk pricing if a bunch of people are interested? I've looked around, but it seems like there are either expensive cameras with good reviews or cheap cameras with bad ones. Not surprised, just wondering if anyone knows of a middle ground.

my friend close by spent around $500 for a self contained system with four cameras and a monitor. it uses some logic to record X amount of hours, then re-recording over the oldest footage when the hard drive gets full. So far he caught a hit and run and a shooting on the cameras.

I would check with the Town Watch program, they already have a network of people with cameras, so maybe some good vendors to use.

The NLNA purchased a mid-range camera system with two cameras for the Community Center. Here's what we know:

http://townwatch.nlna.org/cameras/

If you install, please let us know where you are and which direction your camera faces. We have accumulated a list which we share with police when the need arises.

Thanks. That Logitech setup looks reasonable and it has a 132 degree range, so I'm thinking it might cover both directions if oriented downward.

I have a Logitech camera and it has been a problem. About a month after it was installed it stopped recording, you can view it live but not in playback. Logitech has fixed it remotely about monthly but it always reverts back to not recording.
