Ortlieb's demolition - a topic in today's Inquirer.

Postby marydankanis » Thu Oct 18, 2012 7:42 am

An editorial in today's Inquirer (Thursday, Oct. 18th) bemoans the fact that Tower Investment is seriously considering demolishing Ortlieb's brewery complex. Michael Greenle, a "public interest communications consultant, and native Philadelphia" notes that if the complex is too deteriorated that it can't be saved, it is the fault of Bart Blatstein. Tower Investment has owned the property since 2000 and has failed to maintain it.

Mr. Greenle is hopeful, as are most Northern Liberties residents, that the complex can be saved and repurposed. He notes that the fabric of our neighborhood is slowly being demolished - and I agree!

i believe the notice on the building states that demo could begin as early as next week, so people against it would have to work pretty fast to get a delay.

here is a link to the editorial: http://www.philly.com/philly/opinion/20 ... _brew.html
... there's also another about how many philadelphians do not want a 2nd casino in town (blatstein's newest pet project).

This is the giant box on Poplar off 3rd, right? Why would we want to save that? Repurpose the bricks and steel and get rid of it.

Because it's beautiful and it's a part of the history of the neighborhood. The last piece of the brewing history...that little blue plaque on the corner will be all that's left. How sad.

Demolish it. There is absolutely no demand to lease it for commercial. The only other use is apartments and the neighbors will hate that more.

Unless I'm thinking of another building, the Ortliebs one is a big brick box. That's like saving an old KMart.

are you thinking of the bottling plant, or the taller, in more disrepair building? the bottling plant is supposed to be converted into apartments, no idea when that is happening, though.
