Homeless in NL

Postby jamesg » Thu Oct 04, 2012 8:50 am

Has anyone else noticed a large number of homeless people in the neighborhood? Not just in the park, but throughout the 2nd St. area. The other night I called the police because there was someone sleeping on the sidewalk just outside my door. I understand that if one is homeless they need a place to sleep, but how are we to know if this is a drunk person passed out or if they are just napping? I have also witnessed people who appear to be casing cars/bikes. I feel guilty for even thinking this, but with the blatant thefts right outside of Standard Tap and the sheer number of bike frames I see dotted along 2nd St. I can help but be suspect of everyone.

Is there anything that we can do? Do we call the police every time we suspect someone. I am really concerned for our neighborhood.

2 sets of 2 cops on foot patrol gets rid of most of these issues, but we can't have that for some reason.

Call Project H.O.M.E. if you see someone sleeping on the street. From their website (http://www.projecthome.org/services/housing/): If you see a homeless person living on the streets, please call our Homeless Outreach Hotline at 215-232-1984.

This was posted on another thread. Perhaps the neighborhood should seriously consider collectively hiring our own private security service.

Get a bottle of household ammonia and pour it AROUND them. They will wake up.

No and no. The neighborhood and the city needs better and smarter policing.

Being homeless isn't a crime, but loitering, panhandling and squatting are. It's not good for them and it's not good for the neighborhood.

not sure if calling the police will help the homeless problem, but if you want the homeless off your stoop, i guess the police would be the best people to call. however i suspect that he'll just end up on someone's stoop.

philly needs a tent city.
