Voter I.D. law postponed.

Postby marydankanis » Tue Oct 02, 2012 11:51 am

Good news: The Voter I.D. law has just been postponed in Pennsylvania. Wouldn't it be great if everyone didn't have to show I.D. in order to vote - however, it can still be appealed.

The full ruling from Commonwealth Court only suspends the provisional ballot procedure related to voters without ID. ID will still be requested of all voters, although it will not required to cast a ballot under the standard procedure (machine voting). In essence, the policy that was in effect at the primary election.

Also, this ruling may be appealed to the PA Supreme Court, so the final decision may still be yet to come.

The SC essentially sent the case back to the lower court with instructions to halt the law if Commonwealth couldn't prove disenfranchisment wouldn't happen. SC likely agrees with this ruling.

Now neighbors working the polls won't have to turn away neighbors who have been voting for years in the same division. It is a right and just decision, especially in light of the fact that there is virtually no in-person voter fraud and the Commonwealth stipulated to that fact in the suit. What is the Commonwealth's compelling interest if there is no in-person voter fraud?
