hacked trees outside CVS, color reflections (4th st.)

Postby carpetbagger » Fri Sep 28, 2012 8:37 am

all the small trees between green and spring garden on the west side of 4th have been crudely hacked. a few of them are so cut down now they look like freakin' lollipops. i asked the person behind the counter at cvs about it, he was surprised to hear it and said they didn't have anyone come in and trim the trees.

the trees in front of cvs are barely 2 years old, and one of the trees in front of color reflections was replaced just this year. they are small and in no danger of hitting the few power lines over there (in the case of cvs, the trees are not near any lines), so who would do this and why?

I saw someone "lollipop" a newly planted tree on our block a couple years back. I thought the thing would die for sure, but it's now the best looking one on the block. Maybe it's just a severe pruning method.

I don't know who pruned those trees -- but it is true that the pruning that's good for the health of street trees is pretty different from what could be done in a suburban yard or in the forest. Street trees not only need to be planted thoughtfully to make sure they won't grow into power lines, they also need to have low limbs removed so that people can walk on the sidewalk and trucks don't rip off their street-side limbs.

A limb pruned carefully is always better for the tree than a limb broken, so healthy street trees are "limbed up" to remove branches that are likely to be broken. And yes, that can make them look a little lollipop-y when it's first done, but they will fill in next spring.

And it is better to remove potential-problem branches early, while they're small, than to wait until they are large enough to actually be a problem but are also a proportionally more important to the tree.

If you're still reading, you might be interested in the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Tree Tender program, which teaches all this and much more about planting, pruning, and maintaining street trees in the city. The next program is coming up at the beginning of October -- go to http://www.pennsylvaniahorticulturalsoc ... ining.html for information!

I'm told the trees were hacked by the new pizza joint (on 4th street) to improve visibility of their new sign.

There's a new pizza joint? Or are you referring to the cheese steak place?

The new cheese steak place, I was wondering that too. The trees do not look thoughtfully or professionally pruned. Plus, it wasn't just the ones on CVS property... I could see them perhaps trimming their own trees back, but why would they do the ones further down 4th as well.

Maybe you should ask them before hearsay is assumed to be fact.

I finally actually saw these trees, and I take back any implication in my previous message that the pruning might be appropriate.

Those are some butchered trees.

There are very few circumstances when a tree needs to be "topped" like that -- have the upper limbs cut off as if it were a shrub. It looks to me like this is a case of someone with a pruning saw and no idea what s/he is doing. Ouch.

Oh dear, Dan.

I'm just so sorry you cannot discern pizza vs. cheesesteaks. I suppose this is my bad. I forget about the very small minds that exist in the world.

Anyhoo, not withstanding Dan's idiot comments, these trees were toutured under dark of night by the new CHEESESTEAK joint.

Is that okay Dan? Does CHEESESTEAK meet with your small-minded approval?

Either way ... not relevant to what this thread is trying to address. I hope the trees recover: I think they will be fine in the Spring.

LOL, are you serious?

Let's see....here's what I said: "There's a new pizza joint? Or are you referring to the cheese steak place?"

Which part of that is small minded and idiotic? You seem paranoid to me. I was merely wondering if there's a new pizza place (I love pizza)!

Btw, it seems to me like you're the one that can't discern the difference between pizza and cheesesteaks. Just saying...

And there it goes. Hearsay just became a fact.
