New Thai Restaurant

Postby adlv » Tue Sep 18, 2012 3:34 pm

I am from Connecticut and was visiting friends in Philadelphia this past weekend for dinner and drinks. We tried the new Thai restaurant "Baan Thai" on North American street and I have to say that it was awesome! The menu selection was great and we were allowed to bring our own wine and Thai beer. The food was prepared very well and the service was friendly, efficient and courteous. I highly recommend Baan Thai!!

*sigh* Stuff like this just makes me want to avoid the place.

Want to promote your restaurant here? I don't have a problem with that. But don't do it like this - it just looks like spam.

That's funny, that's the first thing I thought too!

The place is decent, but having had their food for the 2nd time (take-out this time), Circles is clearly the winner for us.

I appreciate the reviews users post on this board and read them the same as I do with Yelp or OpenTable reviews. I don't think it's fair to assume that a positive review of a new neighborhood restaurant is spam.

I am an avid reader of this board, though a new poster. I hesitated to join for exactly this reason: people are so quick to be harsh, rude, or just downright mean. I really wish people would be a bit kinder on this message board; it's a nice to forum to connect with news, events, and people in the neighborhood.

I get why you would be hesitant to join because, yes, I agree that people are far too mean on message boards. However, I check this site out all of the time and read what's going on and it did seem really strange that someone from out of town would sign up for this page just to write a review. I LOVE food. I love trying out new restaraunts in different cities but, as an out of towner, I'm not going to look up their community message board to write a review on the place. Not saying there isn't someone out there that would do that....but it does seem a little off.

I don't consider a positive review of a neighborhood restaurant to be spam. However, when that review not only comes as a person's first post, it comes from a person who claims to be from out of state then yeah, that's a big red flag. I'm sorry, I just don't find it very plausible that somebody that is not from anywhere near NorthernLiberties would have had such an amazing experience at BaanThai he sought out a neighborhood message board to post a positive review.

Even the wording of the post sets off the spam alarm bells - there's just something unnatural and forced about it.

I am a big Green Curry fan-I like it spicy. I have tried most of the Thai Restaurants in the city-mainly Green Curry.

Circles had a very interesting Green Curry-it had a mix of spices that gave it a different flavor than any green curry that I have ever had. It wasn't bad-but the mix of spices wasn't Green Curry to me. I had the Shrimp Green Curry-the shrimp were tasteless (maybe frozen?) I went back a second time and had the same experience.

Baan Thai had one of the best Green Curries that I've had in the city. I had the Seafood Green Curry-the seafood was good (not the best I've had but good) but the Green Curry sauce was excellent. I finished every bit. I look forward to going back.

Got take-out from Baan Thai last night and was pleasantly surprised. I agree with KevinH the green curry was pretty great - kicky spicy and full of fresh vegetables. My take on their food is that it tastes and looks like Thai home-cooking, as if someone's grandma made it; not "restaurant" food. My suggestion is give this establishment a shot, they also have free delivery as well for over $15 orders.

We are sad Sonata closed but wish Baan Thai best of luck!

have to disagree. We did Baan Thai takeout which was tasteless and not as described on their menu. I had been looking forward to trying and comparing to Circles so it was a huge letdown. In their defense, we called and complained and they offered to replace our meals. Didn't take them up on it and won't be going back... despite the green curry rave reviews.

I've been to Baan Thai once, and Circles about six times. The proprietors of both are very nice, and the food and service were very good at both. Food-wise I have a slight preference for one over the other (won't say which), but I would happily go to either one any time.

It's amazing how NL has gone from having no Thai food, to having arguably two of the city's best Thai places in just a couple of months.

Best,
Matt

With a 1:6 ratio, I think we can guess!

It reminds me of the Indian food situation in the neighborhood before Tiffin opened. I wonder what will be next. (Speaking of Indian food, it appears that Sahara has re-opened under a new name recently.)
