forthcoming book about Northern Liberties

Postby Phillyfello » Mon Sep 17, 2012 1:20 pm

The title for my book has changed to Northern Liberties: The Story of a Philadelphia River Ward! It used to be Northern Liberties, Philadelphia: A Brief History. The book will be released this fall by the History Press. Search Facebook for my other book, Philadelphia's Lost Waterfront (2011; same publisher), for updates. Regards,
Harry Kyriakodis

I just received my copies of Northern Liberties: The Story of a Philadelphia River Ward! This means that is it now available at local and online bookstores! Amazon should get it shortly. See https://historypress.net/catalogue/book ... 1609496821 for the publishers website. Or you can buy a copy (a fine Christmas gift) from me...
And here's the blurb from the back cover:
Since the time of William Penn, the Philadelphia neighborhood of Northern Liberties has had tradition of hard work and innovation. A former Leni-Lenape territory, this district became one of the River Wards of North Philadelphia when annexed by the city in 1854. Its mills and factories were powered not just by the Delaware River and its tributaries, but also by immigrants from across Europe and the city’s largest community of free African Americans. The Liberties’ diverse narrative, however, was marred by political and social problems, such the anti-Irish Nativist Riots of 1844. Local historian Harry Kyriakodis traces over 300 years of the neighborhood’s evolution from its rise as a premier industrial district, to the destruction of much of the original cityscape in the 1960s, to its subsequent rebirth as an eclectic and vibrant urban hub. In this first history of Northern Liberties, Kyriakodis unearths the story of this remarkable riverside community.

Northern Liberties: The Story of a Philadelphia River Ward (History Press, 2012) has just been released by the History Press! See https://historypress.net/catalogue/book ... 1609496821 and Amazon (search for Northern Liberties Story).

I also have a Facebook page for it at http://www.facebook.com/NorthernLibertiesBook (please like it!). The text below is from the back cover. I've posted the Introduction and Epilogue at scribd (search for cchali).

A follow up to last year's Philadelphia's Lost Waterfront (History Press), the book is basically a history of NoLibs from the days of Wm. Penn until today. Hard as it may be to believe, this is the first comprehensive book ever about Northern Liberties, Philadelphia.
