Suspicious Behavior on 4th Street

Postby 4thStreet » Wed Aug 29, 2012 10:12 am

I live on the 1000 block of 4th Street. Around midnight last night, a man knocked on my door and said he needed to talk to someone in my house. His story was all over the place, but at the end of it, he told me he was from a towing company and my neighbors were in the hospital. He had to tow their car and park it in the handicapped spot near my house. And he had to give me the keys. This entire conversation happened through the door because I was not about to open the door. I told him if he needed to give me my neighbor's keys, he could put them through the mail slot. He said, okay, then left. Needless to say, no keys were ever put through the mail slot and no car was ever towed to the handicapped spot. The man is African American, late 20s to early 30s, 5'10'' to 6', and thin build.

Please call 911 and report suspicious incidents like this as they happen. If you tell him you are on the phone and the police is coming and the guy still stays around, then it's likely to be legit, but wait until the police comes before doing anything further. Otherwise, if it's a scam, then at least the police can record/report/track such incident. Enough of these will lead them to warning the public through media outlets (so we hope).

Agreed, please report this immediately when it occurs (if you did not, was not mentioned in your post). This could prevent your neighbor from becoming a victim. Or from the other point of view, perhaps they went to your neighbor first, your neighbor reports it and this prevents you from becoming a victim, or at least from having to answer the door.

Simply having a cop drive down the street could be enough for the guy to call it a night or give up. Take action people, make the effort.
